Split-Dalmatia County awards controversy sparks political walkout

The Split-Dalmatia County Assembly session regarding the awarding of regional honors was marked by intense debate and an opposition walkout. The controversy centered on the nomination of pro-life activist Marija Šošić for a personal award in recognition of her work with pregnant women, mothers, and families through initiatives such as ‘40 Days for Life’.

Feminist organizations, including the Women’s Network of Croatia and the Center for Civic Courage, protested the nomination, arguing that the award grants institutional legitimacy to a movement that opposes women's rights to choose abortion. Conversely, the association ‘U ime obitelji’ defended the decision, supporting Šošić’s humanitarian contributions.

During the session, councilor Bojan Ivošević of the Center list argued that in a secular society, moral views should not be used to infringe upon individual rights, such as reproductive autonomy. He criticized the ruling party for hypocrisy regarding abortion laws. Despite the heated discussion, the Assembly President, Mate Šimundić, noted that the award proposals had previously passed unanimously through the committee.
