Split-Dalmatia County honors Queen Jelena Slavna with commemorative medals

The Split-Dalmatia County has introduced a commemorative medal dedicated to Queen Jelena Slavna to mark the 1050th anniversary of her death. Created by academic sculptor Duje Matetić, the patinated bronze medal is part of a limited edition of only 200 pieces.

The medal features an artistic interpretation of the Queen on the front, surrounded by the Latin inscription ‘Helena famosa Regina Croatorum’, while the reverse depicts her sarcophagus. This initiative is part of broader regional efforts to commemorate significant milestones in Croatian history, including the 1100th anniversary of the Croatian Kingdom and the 950th anniversary of King Zvonimir’s coronation.

One of the limited medals was presented to renowned water polo coach Ratko Rudić by County Prefect Blaženko Boban. Additionally, a medal was recently presented to the Pope during the Prefect’s visit to the Vatican. Local officials emphasized the importance of using such historical symbols to promote Croatian heritage and statehood on the international stage.
