Split Extends Night Patrols and Fines Tourists for Public Drinking

The Split City Council approved a new public order regulation that defines offenses such as consuming alcohol on public streets, urinating, sleeping in parks or loitering near clubs within 100 metres of schools and kindergartens. Municipal enforcement officers and police extended their nightly patrols until 4 a.m., with three officers walking the narrow city centre on Saturday night. In Marmontova Street, where several nightclubs are concentrated, officers issued fines of €150–€300 to groups of visibly intoxicated tourists for drinking in public; the fine is halved if paid immediately. Despite heavy intoxication, the tourists did not resist and were informed of the penalty. The fines are expected to boost the city budget.

The situation reflects the growing clash between Split’s booming summer tourism and local efforts to maintain public order and safety after the city’s nightlife has become a viral attraction on social media.
