Split plans archaeological park for Church of the Holy Trinity

The city of Split plans to transform the area surrounding the Church of the Holy Trinity on Poljud into an archaeological park. The project involves refurbishing the site of the Turkish Tower.

The Church of the Holy Trinity is one of the oldest churches from the end of the 8th century and is considered the best-preserved example of a hexaconch (six-lobed) central-type building in Croatia. Archaeologist Maja Petrinec noted that the church's name appears in records as "Terra Trinitatis" between 1060 and 1080. The structure was built on the foundations of an older antique building and underwent significant reconstruction in the 1970s to restore its dome.
