Split reports rise in syphilis and gonorrhea cases
The Clinic for Skin and Venereal Diseases at KBC Split has reported a rise in syphilis and gonorrhea cases in recent years. Dubravka Vuković, head of the clinic, noted that these infections, once considered rare, are seeing increased incidence.
Vuković identified several contributing factors, including changes in sexual behavior. She suggested that the availability of HIV preventive therapies, such as PrEP and PEP, alongside the fact that HIV is now managed as a chronic condition, may have led to more relaxed attitudes toward sexual risk.
Additionally, Split's high volume of tourism is cited as a potential factor in the higher infection rates compared to other Croatian cities like Osijek. Medical professionals also expressed concern regarding the growing antibiotic resistance of syphilis pathogens, which are typically treated with penicillin.
