Split square faces demolition due to illegal construction
Councilor Bojan Ivošević of Split’s Centar district posted a video from the square in front of the Dr. Franjo Tuđman monument showing the removal of a podium that had been used as an open‑air disco. Ivošević said the structure was built illegally and has operated for years “against the law,” despite the area being protected as a UNESCO‑listed historic zone. He noted that engineers had warned the city and the investor that the added floor was not accounted for in the structural calculations, but no action was taken. The councilor argued that the illegal building threatens to erase the memory of the entire square from the city’s collective consciousness.
The dispute highlights tensions between heritage preservation and unauthorized urban development in Split’s old town core, which is subject to strict cultural‑heritage regulations.
