Split to Halt Mixed Waste Intake at Karepovac Landfill as Capacity Exhausts

The City of Split announced that, from 7 August 2026, it will no longer accept mixed municipal waste at the Karepovac landfill because the facility is near full. Mayor Tomislav Šuta sent a notice to nine neighbouring towns and municipalities, stating that the landfill will be closed within months and that all existing contracts for its use will be terminated. The city urged the affected local authorities to find alternative disposal sites in cooperation with regional institutions.

In the same period, a fire broke out at a waste depot near Prgometa (Trogir) and at the deponija site, producing dense smoke. The public health office advised residents to keep windows and doors closed and to use masks if needed. Firefighters, supported by two Canadair aircraft, worked to contain the blaze, deploying dozens of crews and vehicles.

These incidents highlight growing waste‑management challenges in Split‑Dalmatia County as existing facilities reach capacity and emergency responses become necessary.
