Split trial begins for driver in fatal Tesla accident
The trial has commenced in Split for 34-year-old Din Klarić, who is accused of causing a fatal traffic accident in May 2025 while driving a Tesla Plaid S. The incident resulted in the death of a 67-year-old pedestrian.
According to the indictment, Klarić was driving on Ulica Slobode at speeds significantly exceeding the 40 km/h limit, allegedly reaching nearly 140 km/h. The prosecution claims he lost control of the vehicle while attempting to avoid slower traffic, causing the Tesla to veer onto a pedestrian crossing.
During the initial hearing, Klarić stated that he considers himself guilty of the charges but maintained that there was no intent to cause harm. Judge Marina Boko clarified that this statement does not constitute a full admission of the charge regarding indirect intent. Toxicology reports confirmed that Klarić was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash.
The defense is seeking to call witnesses and experts, including Nevena Kralj, to potentially reclassify the criminal offense. They may also argue that mechanical failure played a role in the accident. Klarić faces a potential prison sentence of three to 15 years.
