Spodoptera frugiperda pest activity reported in maize crops

Agricultural authorities and researchers are monitoring increased activity of the Spodoptera frugiperda pest, also known as the fall armyworm or green bollworm, affecting maize crops in different regions.

In Cantabria, Spain, the Department of Rural Development has issued an information sheet following an increase in adult captures in trapping networks. While the pest has caused significant damage to maize in Galicia during 2026, officials do not currently foresee significant damage in Cantabria as most plots are in advanced growth stages. The larvae cause damage by feeding on leaves, leading to irregular perforations and potential foliage loss.

In Argentina, reports have emerged regarding leaf damage and larval survival in commercial maize hybrids utilizing Vip3Aa20 technology during the 2025/26 campaign. A survey conducted by Aapresid across 22 sites in the NOA, NEA, and North Central regions evaluated 26 commercial hybrids. The study aims to establish a baseline for monitoring the performance of Bt technology under selection pressure, as the frequency of damage in these specific hybrids has been higher than in previous seasons.
