SpoGOMI waste collection sport holds regional events in Japan

SpoGOMI, a Japanese sport that turns waste collection into a competitive team activity, is expanding its regional presence through upcoming and recent events.

In Nagano City, the SpoGOMI Koshien 2026 Nagano Prefecture tournament was held on August 1, 2026. Ten high school teams competed to collect waste in the Gondo East Plaza area, collecting a total of 48.39kg of trash. The team ‘Yosshies ver 2’ from Ueda Chikuma High School secured first place by collecting 17.44kg of waste, earning 3,200.5 points. The participants utilized original tools, such as modified tongs and specialized waste bags, to improve efficiency.

Looking ahead, Koko Co., Ltd. will host the SpoGOMI Tournament in Kure on October 3, 2026. This event will be held in collaboration with the ‘Kure Eco Festa 2026’ in Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture. The competition invites teams of three to five members to compete for points based on the weight and type of waste collected within a one-hour time limit. The organizers aim to combine social service with competitive sport to foster community bonds and environmental awareness.
