Spokane Complex fires reach 97 percent containment

The Spokane Complex fires, including the Old Trails Fire, have reached 97 percent containment. While 833 structures were destroyed, firefighting efforts successfully protected at least 11,000 others. All evacuation orders have been lifted, though crews continue mop-up operations in various areas.

During the response to the Old Trails Fire, which was determined to be arson, Spokane County Fire District 10 lost a 2,000-gallon tanker truck. The vehicle became stuck in a ditch during zero-visibility conditions caused by smoke, and the operator was forced to flee as flames consumed the truck. Officials stated they initially delayed reporting the loss out of respect for community members facing significant property damage. The district has begun seeking funding to replace the unit.

Authorities have cautioned residents returning to evacuated zones to be careful when removing fire retardant and to watch for residual heat in metal structures. The EPA is also inspecting public structures and power grids to ensure no hazardous materials were released.
