Spokane wildfires trigger mass evacuations and relief efforts
In August 2026, massive wildfires near Spokane, Washington, caused significant destruction, burning approximately 883,000 acres and destroying between 600 and 850 structures. The fires forced an estimated 65,000 to 67,000 people to evacuate as conditions escalated rapidly to Level 3 emergency warnings.
Relief organizations have mobilized to support survivors. CARE has worked with local partners to provide emergency supplies to women, children, and families displaced by the flames. Simultaneously, the United Methodist Early Response Team, supported by UMCOR, has distributed relief supplies, gas gift cards, and provided disaster case management training.
A notable aspect of the recovery effort includes the deployment of sustainable technology. Fifteen “Suncase 2425” solar suitcases from UMCOR’s Sustainable Response Technology Library were distributed to support recovery. These solar units serve as an alternative to traditional gas generators for powering equipment like shower and tool trailers, reducing emissions and maintenance needs during infrastructure outages.
