Sport Club Corinthians Paulista celebrates 116 years
Sport Club Corinthians Paulista marks 116 years since its founding on September 1, 1910. The club was established by five workers in the Bom Retiro neighborhood of São Paulo: Joaquim Ambrósio, Antônio Pereira, Rafael Perrone, Anselmo Correa, and Carlos Silva.
Founded as a response to the aristocratic nature of early Brazilian football, the club broke away from the elitist structures of the Liga Paulista de Futebol, which primarily hosted clubs composed of wealthy youths. By positioning itself as a team for the people, Corinthians became a major cultural expression for the working classes and developed one of the largest and most engaged fanbases in Brazil.
