Sport Club Internacional candidate requests early elections amid financial crisis
Roberto Melo, a presidential candidate for Sport Club Internacional, has formally requested the advancement of the club's electoral calendar. Melo cited a severe institutional, sporting, and financial crisis as the primary reason for the request, aiming to begin transition planning for 2027 sooner.
The club is currently facing significant challenges, including approximately R$ 1 billion in debt, a FIFA-imposed transfer ban due to unpaid debts, and a precarious position in the Brazilian Championship standings.
In response to the ongoing financial scrutiny, former president Marcelo Medeiros defended his previous administration (2017–2020), claiming he significantly reduced the club's debt and left behind assets through player sales that generated nearly 100 million euros. Medeiros stated he possesses documentation to support these claims and intends to provide further details once the current administration of Alessandro Barcellos concludes.
