European Ports Organisation leaders visit Port of Algeciras

Leadership from the European Ports Organisation (ESPO), including President Ansis Zeltiņš and Secretary General Isabelle Ryckboost, recently visited the Port of Algeciras to assess local operations and regional challenges.

Discussions focused on the impact of European Union regulations, specifically the Emissions Trading System (ETS), which is reportedly causing shifts in maritime lines and diverting investments to third-party countries. The delegation also addressed how current geopolitical tensions are affecting European port activity.

During the visit, the ESPO delegation toured the TTI Algeciras terminal at Isla Verde Exterior. TTI Algeciras CEO Alonso Luque presented expansion plans for the semi-automated terminal, which includes upcoming construction to add 16 hectares of infrastructure. This expansion aims to reach an initial annual capacity of 2.1 million TEUs.
