Zeeland beach guards warn of strong currents during spring tide

Beach guards in Zeeland have placed extra patrols and warning signs along the Vlissingen boulevard as spring tide is expected to create strong currents. The signs, positioned between Boulevard Bankert and Boulevard De Ruyter, alert beachgoers that low‑tide areas are increasingly used and that entering the water at high tide can bring swimmers close to the shipping channel, posing a danger.

People swept by the current may be carried toward the Leugenaarshoofd, where strong flows, rough dike cover and shells make reaching shore difficult. A swimming ban already applies at Nollestrand, and red flags warn of hazardous conditions near the paddleheads. Despite the warnings, officials expect no major problems in the coming weekend, as wind conditions are favourable and no storms are forecast.

Bas‑Jan Spuijbroek, director of Stichting Strandexploitatie Veere, emphasized the combination of wind and spring tide as the key risk factor for swimmers.
