Sporting Charleroi stadium project stalled over financing

Plans for the Zebrarena, the proposed multifunctional stadium for Sporting Charleroi in Marchienne-au-Pont, have reached a standstill due to financing difficulties. Although the building permit has been issued and the site has been remediated, the project requires an estimated 75 million euros in funding.

A major obstacle is a 50 million euro loan from Belfius, which requires guarantees that the City of Charleroi is currently unwilling to provide. Mayor Thomas Dermine has rejected opposition requests for the city to act as a guarantor, stating that there was never an intention for the city to participate in the financial structure. Dermine noted that the Walloon Region is already providing support, arguing that the regional intervention is appropriate given the stadium's intended role as a major cultural and economic hub for the region.

Sporting Charleroi is currently seeking alternative solutions to secure the necessary funds. The club had previously aimed to begin construction in late 2026 or early 2027, with a projected two-year build time.
