Portuguese football leaders discuss financial sustainability and growth
During the Portugal Football Summit, leaders from several Portuguese football clubs discussed financial sustainability, the importance of European competitions, and infrastructure investments.
Sporting CP President Frederico Varandas emphasized that qualifying for the UEFA Champions League is the club’s primary objective due to its massive financial impact, noting that recent deep runs provided approximately 80 million euros in revenue. He defended coach Rui Borges, highlighting the difficulty of competing against clubs with significantly larger budgets.
Miguel Ribeiro, president of Famalicão, addressed the gap between the top three clubs—Sporting, Benfica, and FC Porto—and the rest of the league. He advocated for the centralization of television rights to strengthen the domestic market and close this competitive divide.
SC Braga President António Salvador announced plans to invest 50 million euros to modernize the club's stadium. The goal is to transform the venue into a more functional revenue generator, aiming to increase annual stadium income from roughly 2.5 million euros to between 12.5 and 15 million euros over the next five years.
