Sporting Lisbon signs midfielder Issa Doumbia for €20 million

Sporting CP have completed the signing of 22‑year‑old midfielder Issa Doumbia from Venezia for a reported €20 million plus €6 million in performance variables, making him the club’s fifth‑most expensive acquisition. The Italian‑trained player, born in Italy to Ivorian parents, said the move is “the most important step” of his career and likened his playing style to that of Paul Pogba, expressing ambitions to compete in the UEFA Champions League.

Italian journalist Giacomo Iacobellis praised Doumbia’s physical presence, technical ability and versatility, noting his aggression in ball recovery and capacity to influence play across the pitch. He cautioned that the youngster will need time to adapt to Portuguese football and should be afforded patience as his potential develops.
