Sports Authority and Wilko closures leave thousands unemployed

The U.S. sports‑retail chain Sports Authority, which operated 463 stores across the United States and Puerto Rico, entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March 2016 and failed to find a buyer. The liquidation of the company resulted in the loss of roughly 14,500 jobs.

In the United Kingdom, home‑goods retailer Wilko, founded in 1930, entered administration in August 2023 after an unsuccessful rescue bid. All 408 stores were shut down, cutting more than 12,500 jobs. Both closures were driven by heavy debt, competition from online retailers and changing consumer habits, and each left a large workforce without employment.

The failures highlight the vulnerability of large brick‑and‑mortar retail chains in a shifting market environment.
