Sports betting odds formats and mechanics explained

Sports betting odds serve as a tool to communicate both the potential payout and the perceived likelihood of an event occurring. There are three primary formats used globally: decimal, fractional, and moneyline (American) odds.

Decimal odds, common in Europe, Canada, and Australia, represent the total return including the original stake. Fractional odds, frequently used in the UK, express profit as a ratio relative to the stake. Moneyline odds use positive and negative numbers to indicate potential profit on a 100-unit stake or the amount required to wager to achieve a 100-unit profit.

Key concepts in betting include the bookmaker’s margin, often called the vig or juice, which is a fee included in the odds to ensure operator profitability. Additionally, bettors use implied probability to convert odds into a percentage chance of an outcome, which helps in identifying value bets where the offered odds exceed the true statistical probability of an event.
