Sports broadcasting industry faces rising threat from piracy

The sports broadcasting industry is facing a significant challenge from illegal streaming and piracy as more content moves behind paywalls. In the United Kingdom, piracy has reached epidemic levels, with Ampere Analysis reporting that approximately half of sports fans admit to using alternative streaming methods.

Authorities have begun implementing stricter crackdowns on illegal services. Recent legal actions in the UK include the imprisonment of individuals running illicit streaming operations and selling illegal subscriptions. These measures aim to protect the massive value of broadcasting rights, such as the Premier League’s recent $10.8 billion domestic rights deal.

In France, the impact of piracy is already visible in league finances. Following a dispute over piracy prevention, DAZN ended its contract to screen top-tier French football matches. This departure caused the league’s broadcast income to drop from roughly €700 million per year to €412 million this season. While major clubs like Paris St Germain remain stable, smaller clubs have faced severe financial strain, with some reporting losses of tens of millions of euros.
