Sports clubs in Crema face delays in appointing Safeguarding Officers

Amateur sports clubs in the Crema region of Italy are facing delays in complying with legislative requirements to appoint a Safeguarding Officer. Introduced by a 2021 decree, these officers are intended to protect athletes from abuse, discrimination, and gender-based violence.

According to Massimo Carini, president of the CSI Crema committee, only about 50 of the 88 affiliated clubs have appointed this role. In approximately 50% of these cases, the club president is currently acting as the officer. However, regulations require the role to be held by a different, independent adult with proven sports sector experience to ensure autonomy.

The committee aims to have all clubs in compliance by the start of the new sports season. To facilitate this, the CSI has organized training courses in collaboration with CONI, and online training options are also available.
