Sports face evolving debates over masculinity and identity

The sporting world is facing evolving social dynamics regarding masculinity and identity. An Ipsos bva study indicates that traditional narratives of male strength and dominance are becoming outdated. French men, in particular, report navigating diverse models ranging from sensitivity to performance, with only 24% feeling accurately represented in advertising.

Simultaneously, sports institutions are becoming central arenas for cultural and identity-based debates. In the United States, WNBA player Sophie Cunningham has sparked controversy by opposing the participation of transgender athletes in women’s competitions, a stance that has drawn both White House support and criticism from fellow athletes. In France, the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) has engaged in social initiatives, such as players wearing the names of discrimination victims on their jerseys to promote awareness.
