Sports fandom costs drive rising consumer debt in the US
Americans are spending an average of nearly $2,000 annually on sports fandom, according to a National Debt Relief survey. The costs associated with tickets, merchandise, and streaming subscriptions are increasingly impacting household finances, with 47% of sports fans reporting they have taken on debt to fund these expenses. The financial pressure is most acute among adults aged 25 to 34, where 62% have incurred debt related to their fandom and average annual spending rises to approximately $2,627.
In the NFL, the cost of attending games varies significantly by location. An analysis by The Action Network found that a family of four attending a Buffalo Bills game at Highmark Stadium faces the highest estimated gameday cost at $2,193.95, which includes tickets, parking, and concessions. Conversely, the Cleveland Browns offer the most affordable experience for families. The rising costs of following professional sports are attributed to factors such as the necessity of multiple streaming service subscriptions and high stadium prices.
