Sports leagues leverage YouTube to expand audience reach
Sports leagues and teams are increasingly utilizing YouTube to expand their reach beyond traditional broadcasting and subscription models. The Indian Super League (ISL) has implemented a strategy to stream all 163 of its matches for free on YouTube, alongside Sony Sports and SonyLIV, aiming to prioritize audience discovery and growth over immediate high-value media rights fees.
Globally, sports organizations are shifting toward creating original long-form content, such as documentaries and behind-the-scenes series, to transform YouTube into a primary destination for fans. This move coincides with changing viewing habits; data indicates that YouTube is gaining ground on traditional television, with connected TV usage rising significantly. For some organizations, such as the Montreal Canadiens and Chicago Bulls, connected TVs have even overtaken mobile devices as the primary way fans consume their YouTube content.
