Sports Nutrition Experts Advise Timing for Exercise After Meals

Nutrition specialists explain that exercising immediately after a large meal can be uncomfortable and reduce performance because blood flow is diverted to digestion. They recommend waiting about three hours after a full meal before intense activity, and 1–1.5 hours after a balanced snack. For a light, fast‑carb snack, a 30‑minute gap is usually sufficient. Light walking after eating is encouraged, as it aids intestinal motility without hindering digestion.

In the context of post‑workout recovery, experts stress that a single post‑exercise meal cannot compensate for poor overall habits. Adequate sleep, regular hydration, and balanced daily nutrition are essential for restoring glycogen stores, repairing muscle tissue, and maintaining fluid balance. While protein and carbohydrates are important for muscle repair and energy replenishment, they must be part of a consistent dietary pattern rather than a one‑off solution.
