Sports organizations urge suspension of Canada-U.S. trade tariffs

Sports organizations and companies are calling on the Canadian and United States governments to suspend tariffs on sporting goods. The calls come amid an escalating trade war following the collapse of trade deal negotiations in mid-August.

Following the breakdown in talks, U.S. President Donald Trump imposed 50 per cent duties on $28 billion worth of Canadian goods, which include hockey equipment, golf and gym gear, and fishing equipment. In response, Canada implemented retaliatory tariffs on September 8, targeting items such as tracksuits, ski suits, swimwear, and golf equipment.

Aneysha Bhat, a spokesperson for the Washington-based Sports and Fitness Industry Association, stated that these tariffs are harming industry companies and undermining public participation in healthy activities.
