Sports pressure linked to increased anxiety in adolescent athletes
Competitive sports can significantly impact the mental health of teenagers, often leading to increased anxiety through performance expectations, demanding schedules, and identity tied strictly to athletic success. A narrative review published in Discover Mental Health, analyzing 45 studies of athletes aged 12 to 19, found that approximately 40% to 50% of adolescent athletes experience elevated anxiety. Additionally, burnout affects between 35% and 45% of those participating in endurance sports.
Unlike academic or social stress, sports-related pressure is often public and immediate, as performance failures occur in front of coaches, parents, and peers. Research in the Journal of Clinical Medicine suggests that early specialization in a single sport increases the risk of social isolation, emotional dysregulation, and burnout. When an athlete's entire identity is centered on their sport, poor performance can lead to severe impacts on self-worth, potentially resulting in anxiety and depression.
