In football, FIFA is implementing a significant change to the international match calendar starting with the 2026-2027 season. The traditional separate September and October international breaks will be merged into a single 16-day period. This new window, first occurring from September 21 to October 6, 2026, will allow national teams to play up to four matches, including Nations League fixtures. For domestic clubs, this change means two consecutive weekends without league matches, such as in Serie A, as players remain with their national teams for a longer, continuous duration.
