Spotify implements QR code verification for Family plans

Spotify has introduced a new verification method to ensure that members of Premium Family and Duo plans reside at the same physical address as the account manager. The process requires the plan manager to display a dynamic QR code on their mobile device, which must be scanned by other members using their own smartphones while both parties are in the same location.

To prevent users from bypassing the system with screenshots, the QR code refreshes every few seconds. Once notified of a verification requirement, users have seven days to complete the scan. Failure to comply within this timeframe results in the account being downgraded to the ad-supported Free tier. Additionally, affected users will be barred from joining any other Family or Duo subscription plans for 12 months, though they remain eligible to purchase individual Premium subscriptions.

While Spotify has previously used address-based checks, this new in-person requirement aims to more strictly enforce household residency rules. Some users have reportedly attempted to circumvent the measure using video calls or screen-sharing software, but the company is rolling out the feature to tighten control over subscription sharing.
