Spotify implements QR code verification for Family Plan members
Spotify has introduced a new verification method for its Premium Family Plan to ensure all members reside at the same address. The system requires members to physically scan a dynamic QR code displayed on the account administrator's mobile device.
To prevent users from sharing subscriptions with friends or relatives living elsewhere, the QR code updates every few seconds, making screenshots ineffective for remote verification. Once notified, users have seven days to complete the scan. Failure to comply results in the user being removed from the shared plan and being barred from joining any other Family or Duo plan for 12 months. Affected users must then subscribe to an individual Premium plan to maintain ad-free service.
Spotify co-CEO Alex Norström described the move as a “routine improvement” of existing tools rather than a crackdown, noting that the Family Plan has been a significant part of the subscriber base for over a decade. The company aims to prevent users from bypassing residency requirements to reduce costs.
