Spotify tests podcast ad-skipping feature amid creator backlash
Spotify is testing a new interface feature called ‘Skip Ahead’ for select Premium subscribers. The tool allows users to bypass podcast introductions, promotional segments, and host-read advertisements with a single tap, rather than the multiple manual skips currently required.
The feature has sparked significant backlash from the podcasting industry. Creators and media networks, such as Crooked Media, argue that the tool devalues host-read sponsorships, which are a primary revenue source for independent shows. Critics note a strategic asymmetry: the one-tap skip applies to ads sold by independent publishers but does not work for advertisements sold directly through Spotify’s own internal marketplace.
Spotify has defended the test, stating it aims to improve listener retention by reducing friction during wordy ad breaks. The company maintains that the goal is to help users spend more time engaging with content they enjoy. While the test is currently limited to specific markets including the United States and the United Kingdom, industry observers are closely monitoring whether the feature will become a permanent part of the platform.
