Spotify to label AI-generated artist profiles with new badges
Spotify is introducing a new transparency measure to identify artist profiles that are generated by artificial intelligence. Starting in mid-September, the platform will implement an ‘AI Persona’ badge to distinguish between real human artists and virtual identities that use photorealistic AI-generated names, images, or personas.
This badge is specifically designed to label the artist's public identity rather than the method used to create the music itself. A human artist using AI as a creative tool will not automatically receive the badge. To ensure accuracy, Spotify will allow artists to self-disclose their AI status via Spotify for Artists, but the company will also conduct its own reviews and allow users to report suspicious profiles.
As part of its strategy to prioritize authentic human creators, Spotify will exclude AI Personas from its primary algorithmic recommendations, such as Discover Weekly, Release Radar, and Spotify Radio, by default. These profiles will only appear in personalized recommendations if a listener explicitly chooses to follow them. This initiative follows previous efforts to combat spam and unauthorized voice cloning on the platform.
