Spotify to label AI-generated artist personas
Spotify is introducing a new “AI Persona” labeling system to increase transparency regarding artificial intelligence on its platform. Starting in mid-September, the streaming service will apply these badges to artist profiles whose public identities—such as names and photos—appear to be machine-generated rather than representing real people.
The initiative distinguishes between the use of AI as a creative tool and the creation of a synthetic identity. A human musician using generative AI for production will not receive the label; instead, the badge specifically targets profiles that pose as human artists through photorealistic AI-generated personas. Artists can voluntarily self-disclose their status via Spotify for Artists, but the company will also conduct independent reviews, focusing initially on high-audience profiles.
As a consequence of being labeled an “AI Persona,” these profiles and their music will be excluded by default from Spotify’s algorithmic and editorial recommendations, including personalized mixes and suggested playlists. The content will only appear in user feeds if the listener explicitly follows the artist or searches for them. This move follows pressure from the music industry to address the rise of synthetic content and ensures that listeners can distinguish between human and artificial identities.
