Spotify to label and restrict AI-generated artist profiles
Spotify is implementing new measures to identify and restrict AI-generated artist profiles. Starting in mid-September, the platform will introduce labels such as ‘AI Persona’ or ‘Likely AI Persona’ for profiles using artificially generated names or visual identities.
To combat catalog saturation and fraudulent activity, music from these identified profiles will be excluded from algorithmic recommendations, such as Discover Weekly, and from editorial playlists. Once labeled, these tracks will only be accessible if a listener searches for them directly or follows the specific profile.
The industry is facing a massive influx of synthetic content; some reports indicate platforms receive approximately 75,000 to 90,000 AI-generated songs daily. This surge has led to significant economic concerns, with estimates suggesting that fraudulent bot-driven streams for AI content could impact billions in revenue. While Spotify is introducing labeling, other services like Apple Music have already begun removing these streams from royalty counts to prevent demonetization of human artists.
