Spotify filters 50 million AI-generated and spam tracks from recommendations

Spotify has announced that it has excluded more than 50 million tracks identified as “slop or spam” from its recommendation systems in 2026. These tracks, which include low-quality AI-generated content and mass-uploaded spam, remain in the catalog but are no longer promoted via algorithms, playlists, or editorial suggestions.

The company identified these patterns by analyzing listener behavior, specifically focusing on tracks that users frequently skipped, ignored, or reported. To combat evolving tactics like SEO manipulation, duplicate uploads, and unnaturally short tracks, Spotify has updated its recommendation engine using metadata analysis and third-party AI detection tools.

In addition to recommendation filtering, Spotify has removed over 75 million tracks from its platform entirely due to serious or repeated policy violations. The company is also expanding transparency features, including the “AI Persona” badge for artificial identities and “AI Credits” to allow artists to disclose how AI was used in their creative process. These measures aim to protect the visibility and revenue of human artists against the influx of mass-produced synthetic content.
