Spotted lanternfly detected in Canada for the first time

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has confirmed the first detection of the invasive spotted lanternfly in Canada. The insect was identified alive in Windsor, Ontario, on September 15.

Native to Southeast Asia, the spotted lanternfly is known to feed on the sap of more than 100 plant species. While it can impact various horticulture, forestry, and residential areas, it poses a particularly significant threat to the grape and wine industries by damaging or killing grapevines.

In response, the CFIA and the Invasive Species Centre have implemented movement restrictions on regulated materials, such as potentially infested plants, to prevent further spread. Surveillance is currently underway in the Windsor area to determine the extent of the infestation. Authorities are urging the public to report sightings using a “spot it, snap it, catch it, report it” protocol to assist in containment efforts.
