SPP seeks gas supplies from Algeria and Azerbaijan
Slovenský plynárenský priemysel (SPP) is actively seeking to diversify its natural gas sources to prepare for the European Union's REPowerEU mandate, which bans Russian pipeline gas imports by November 1, 2027. SPP Chairman Juraj Ondris stated that the company is negotiating with numerous global firms and conducting high-level political discussions with Algeria and Azerbaijan.
SPP has already successfully completed a test import from Azerbaijan, confirming there are no technical or commercial barriers. The proposed strategy includes sourcing one billion cubic meters each from Algeria and Azerbaijan, supplemented by liquefied natural gas (LNG) and spot market purchases. However, Ondris noted that sourcing gas from Algeria presents logistical risks, as transit through Tunisia involves unpredictable transit fees.
Currently, Russian gas remains the most economical option for Slovakia because Gazprom covers the transportation costs. While experts like Urban Rusnák describe the continued reliance on Russian energy by Slovakia and Hungary as a 'Carpathian anomaly' compared to the rest of Europe, he noted that the discounts gained from Russian oil and gas are not being directly reflected in lower prices for Slovak consumers.
