Spring Boot 2.x commercial support to end in December 2026
Commercial support for Spring Boot 2.x is scheduled to end on December 31, 2026. This follows the conclusion of open-source support in November 2023. As one of the most widely used frameworks for Java business applications, Spring Boot 2.x powers core processes in sectors such as banking, insurance, industry, and public administration.
Migrating to Spring Boot 3 is a complex undertaking rather than a standard version update. The transition requires upgrading to Java 17 and involves a significant shift from 'javax' to 'jakarta' across the entire codebase, affecting all application and third-party dependencies. Industry experts suggest that migration projects in established application landscapes typically take between 12 and 36 months.
Christian Grave, Managing Director of ProLicense, noted that organizations starting migrations now may still find themselves without support by January 2027 if the process is not completed. To bridge this gap, third-party providers like HeroDevs offer security patches for end-of-life open-source components.
