Springdale sisters face criminal charges after playground swing breaks

Two sisters, aged 10 and 12, faced criminal-mischief charges in Springdale, Pennsylvania, after a playground swing broke at Veterans Memorial Park. The incident occurred when the children were reportedly twisting the swing chains to spin faster, a common playground activity that eventually caused a chain to snap.

Borough officials identified five juveniles involved and requested approximately $59 from each family to cover the $295 repair cost. The mother, Katie Huss, refused to pay, requesting evidence of intentional damage and information regarding the equipment's last inspection. Following her refusal to pay restitution, the borough pursued criminal charges in juvenile court.

During the proceedings, a police officer testified that the children violated posted rules against twisting the chains. However, the girls were ultimately found not responsible because officials could not prove intent to cause damage. Despite the court ruling, Huss indicated that the borough may still pursue a civil case.
