Springe council postpones renaming square after Olivia Jones

The local council in Springe, Germany, has postponed a decision regarding the renaming of a public square to honor the prominent drag queen Olivia Jones. The proposal, championed by Mayor Christian Springfeld, aimed to rename a previously unnamed square in front of the Old Town Hall to provide visibility for sexual minorities and honor Jones, who is an honorary ambassador of the town.

In an open letter, Jones described the potential renaming as a “unique opportunity to set a probably historically unprecedented sign for diversity” in a time when advocates for freedom and democracy face increasing pressure. She even suggested a compromise name, “Olivia-Jones-Platz der Vielfalt” (Olivia Jones Square of Diversity).

Mayor Springfeld expressed disappointment with the delay, describing the decision not to decide as “senseless,” though he noted he must respect the council's action. It remains uncertain when the topic will be revisited following the upcoming municipal elections.
