Springfield Central High School football program faces second season cancellation
Springfield Central High School in Missouri cancelled its varsity football season for a second straight year. The 2025 season was called off after only 25 athletes reported for preseason camp, prompting athletic director Josh Scott to cite player safety as the reason. Despite hiring new head coach John Ely, the school has not confirmed a 2026 schedule.
At least five opponent schools – Hillcrest, East Newton, Moberly, Cassville and Seneca – have already removed Central from their 2026 schedules, and Hillcrest coach Keegan Ganz confirmed the season‑opening game will not be played. The cancellations also affect related activities such as the marching band and cheer squad.
Springfield Public Schools continue to evaluate the program, but with persistent low participation the Bulldogs are unlikely to field a varsity team for the upcoming fall.
