Springfield District 186 implements new AI guidelines for schools
Springfield District 186 Board of Education has introduced new guidelines regarding the use of artificial intelligence in its schools. The district has distilled a 408-page state AI manual into concise, one-page instructions for elementary and secondary students, focusing on responsible use and ensuring technology supports rather than replaces human instruction.
Teachers are expected to clarify when AI use is permitted in their classrooms, and the district is offering optional training for staff. An AI committee, composed of teachers, administrators, support staff, and high school students, helped develop these rules. The guidelines and new communication pathways for families will be made available on the district website and in the student handbook.
