Springfield, Ohio faces uncertain future as Supreme Court ends Haitian TPS protections

Thousands of Haitian immigrants have moved to Springfield, Ohio since 2020, helping reverse decades of decline. Working in manufacturing, distribution and services, they filled labor shortages at companies such as Honda, Amazon and Dole, bought homes, joined schools and sports teams, and contributed to the city’s economic resurgence.

A 6‑3 U.S. Supreme Court ruling last week upheld the Trump administration’s authority to terminate Temporary Protected Status for more than 330,000 Haitians and 6,100 Syrians. The decision threatens to turn Springfield into “ground zero” for a mass de‑documentation of immigrants, with local leaders warning that the loss of over 10,000 Haitian residents could undo the city’s growth. Pastor Carl Ruby said, “The Supreme Court decision is not just a tragedy for Haitians, it’s a tragedy for Springfield, Ohio.” The ruling also sets a precedent that could affect up to 1.3 million TPS holders from other countries.
