Springville, Alabama, manages cleanup and delays after train derailment

Cleanup and environmental monitoring efforts are ongoing in Springville, Alabama, following a train derailment involving a Norfolk Southern train. The incident, which occurred after a collision with a tractor-trailer, resulted in the derailment of two locomotives and 34 railcars, causing a spill of seed oil.

The Alabama Department of Environmental Management reported that no hazardous materials have left the site. While seed and vegetable oils are biodegradable and less toxic than crude oil, environmental experts warn of potential localized impacts. Coosa Riverkeeper Field Director Lucas Allison noted that large quantities of oil can block oxygen exchange, clog fish gills, and create low-oxygen conditions for aquatic life near the bottom of waterways.

As repairs to the damaged tracks continue, residents in Springville are warned to expect delays at crossings, as trains will be traveling at reduced speeds through the area.
