Global stock markets rally amid easing Middle East tensions and rate shifts

Global stock markets have seen significant movement driven by shifting interest rate policies and easing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. In Canada, the S&P/TSX Composite Index surged, gaining over 380 points as investor sentiment improved following signals that the U.S. conflict with Iran may be nearing an end. This shift contributed to a decline in crude oil prices, which helped alleviate inflationary concerns.

In Asia, markets generally trended upward. Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 1.9 percent following the Bank of Japan’s decision to raise its benchmark interest rate to 1.25 percent, a 31-year high. South Korea’s Kospi also saw a substantial jump of 2.3 percent. These moves follow recent interest rate hikes by the U.S. Federal Reserve, which raised its target rate to a range of 3.75% to 4.00%.

While energy stocks faced some pressure due to falling oil prices, the materials and technology sectors provided support in various regions. In Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 saw modest gains, with mining stocks like Rio Tinto and BHP Group advancing, partially offset by weakness in energy and technology sectors.
