Spyder air defense system passes tests in Czech Republic

The Czech Republic has reached a significant milestone in its military modernization as the Spyder air defense system successfully completed military testing. Defense Minister Jaromír Zůna announced during NATO Days in Ostrava that the army is beginning to integrate the system into its structures to enhance capabilities against aerial threats.

The Czech Republic has already purchased four Spyder batteries from Israel. This acquisition is intended to replace aging technology used since the 1970s. According to Deputy Chief of the General Staff Petr Čepelka, the new system is four to five times more powerful and capable of responding to a variety of threats, including aircraft, helicopters, drones, and cruise missiles.

Prime Minister Andrej Babiš indicated that the government is considering the purchase of additional, newer-generation Spyder batteries. Babiš emphasized that air defense is a top priority for national security and noted the importance of building broader European missile defense capabilities, particularly in response to the use of ballistic missiles in the conflict in Ukraine.
