Spyros Chalvatzis, historic Communist Party of Greece leader, dies at 79

Spyros Chalvatzis, a prominent figure within the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), has passed away at the age of 79. A political ceremony to honor his life is scheduled for Tuesday, September 15, at 17:30 at the courtyard of the Association of Imprisoned and Exiled Resistance Fighters 1967–1974 (SFΕΑ) in Athens.

Born in Kozani in 1947, Chalvatzis had a long political career spanning over six decades. He served as a member of the KKE Central Committee's Political Bureau and was the Secretary of the Central Council of the Communist Youth of Greece (KNE) until 1986. He also served as a Member of Parliament for Athens B from 2007 to 2014 and held various local government positions.

During the Greek military junta, Chalvatzis faced significant persecution, including multiple arrests and exiles to Gyaros, Leros, and Oropos. His political journey was deeply rooted in the labor movement and the struggle against the dictatorship. Following his death, various political figures and colleagues, including singer Giorgos Dalaras, expressed their condolences, noting his consistency and dedication to his ideology.
