Spyros Chalvatzis: Political funeral held for veteran KKE leader
A political funeral was held in Athens for Spyros Chalvatzis, a prominent leader of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), who passed away at age 79 after a long illness. The ceremony took place at the courtyard of the Association of Prisoners and Exiles 1967-1974 (SFEA), a location of symbolic importance given Chalvatzis's history of resistance and exile during the Greek military dictatorship.
Dimitris Koutsoumpas, General Secretary of the KKE, delivered the eulogy, describing Chalvatzis as a figure whose life was inseparable from the history of the movement. He highlighted Chalvatzis's lifelong commitment to Marxist-Leninist principles and his role as a former Secretary of the KNE and a Member of Parliament.
The event was attended by a wide range of political figures, including Speaker of the Parliament Nikitas Kaklamanis, various ministers, and representatives from multiple political parties. Chalvatzis's family requested that, in lieu of wreaths, donations be made to support the Cuban healthcare system through mediCuba Europa.
